The Scottish economist, Adam Smith, is credited with establis-hing the principles of "laissez-faire" in his wealth of Nations pub-lished in 1776. Today, international commerce has brought substantialgains to global entrepreneurs. On the other hand, it can also placegreat demands on companies that are not prepared to meet the compe-tition. The success in trade does not depend necessarily on lower laborcosts, interest rates or exchange rates. In reality, economic activitywill prosper in regions where the labor force is knowledgeable andhighly skilled and where the maximum efficient production methodsexist.
